What's new in Nexus

Every release, newest first. Updates install automatically.

  1. v4.0.0 — Quick Capture, Vault Stats & Rail Redesign

    Released: August 25, 2026

    New

    • Quick Capture. A new capture button at the top of the rail lets you jot a stray thought from anywhere in the app — Browser, Assistant, Graph — without switching to the Notes tab first. The first line becomes the note's title, everything after becomes the body. Save with the button or ⌘/Ctrl+Enter.
    • Vault Stats. A new Stats tab (between Assistant and Graph) surfaces a snapshot of your knowledge base: total notes, total words written, average words per note, notes created this week, most-used tag, and longest note. Computed entirely from data already stored locally — no new tracking, nothing sent anywhere.
    • Active tab indicator. The rail now shows a subtle accent bar next to whichever tab is active, replacing the flat background-only highlight.

    Changed

    • Rail layout restructured. Nav icons are now top-anchored with Settings pinned to the bottom via a single spacer, replacing the previous logo-anchored layout.

    Fixed

    • Rail vertical layout bug. Removing the old logo mark had left two competing auto-margins in the rail, pushing icons into the middle of the sidebar instead of the top. Rail spacing is now single-sourced from one spacer above Settings.

    Removed

    • Rail logo mark (.rail-mark). Replaced by the Quick Capture button in the same position.
  2. v3.3.0 — Google Gemini Assistant

    Released: August 24, 2026

    New

    • Google Gemini Assistant. Nexus now uses Google Gemini as its AI provider. Bring your own Gemini API key to use the Assistant.
    • Secure API key storage. Gemini API keys use the same secure storage model as before — stored in the OS credential store and never written to disk in plain text.

    Changed

    • Switched AI provider from OpenRouter to Google Gemini. The Assistant now communicates directly with Google Gemini instead of OpenRouter.
    • Gemini API key setup. Settings now use a Gemini API key instead of an OpenRouter API key.

    Removed

    • OpenRouter integration. Removed OpenRouter support entirely, including its API integration and related configuration.
    • OpenRouter free-tier routing. Nexus no longer uses OpenRouter's free-tier routing as a fallback infrastructure.
  3. v3.0.0 — Trash, Version History & Themes

    Released: August 23, 2026

    New

    • Trash. Deleting a note now soft-deletes it instead of removing it outright — restore it any time, or delete it forever from the new Trash panel. Includes an "Empty Trash" bulk action.
    • Version History. Nexus now snapshots a note roughly once a minute while you edit. Browse every earlier version in a two-pane panel and restore any of them — restoring saves your current state as a version too, so nothing is ever truly lost.
    • Pin notes to keep the ones you care about at the top of the list.
    • Command Palette (Cmd/Ctrl+K) — fuzzy-search your notes by title or jump straight to any tab or action.
    • Four themes: Default, Dusk (navy), Daylight (light mode), and Dawn (warm/amber), switchable from Settings.
    • Backup & Restore. One-click database backup via SQLite's VACUUM INTO, restore from a previous backup file, and export every note as a folder-preserving Markdown .zip.
    • Smart paste. Code copied from VS Code (or anything that pastes syntax-highlighted HTML) is automatically wrapped in a fenced code block with the right language tag.
    • Auto-capitalization for the start of sentences, new lines, and a standalone lowercase "i" — skips code blocks and common abbreviations ("Mr.", "Etc.") automatically.

    Improved

    • Folder picker is now a fully themed custom dropdown — the previous native <select> ignored dark mode and rendered with OS chrome.
    • Full formatting toolbar: bold/italic/underline/strikethrough, headings, quotes, bulleted & numbered lists (Notion-style — Enter continues the list), inline code, code blocks, links, and case transforms.
    • Settings reorganized into clear sections: Appearance, Assistant, Browser, Editor, Data, About.
    • Code blocks are now syntax-highlighted (highlight.js).

    Fixed

    • Assorted stability fixes across the note editor and version-save timing.
  4. v2.1.0 — Tags

    Released: August 22, 2026

    New

    • Tags. Type #something anywhere in a note and it becomes a real, filterable tag automatically once the note is saved — no separate tag-management screen, and tags disappear on their own once nothing references them.

    Fixed

    • Small stability fixes following the larger 2.0.0 release.
  5. v2.0.0 — Browser, Assistant & Knowledge Graph

    Released: August 22, 2026

The biggest release yet — three major subsystems in one drop.

    New

    • Browser tab. A real, multi-tab browser (up to 8 tabs) built on native child webviews rather than iframes, so sites that block framing (banks, most social platforms) still work correctly. Includes back/forward/reload, bookmarks, and download tracking.
    • AI Assistant tab. Chat that's grounded in your notes and, optionally, whatever page is open in the Browser tab. Conversation history is saved locally and survives a restart.
    • Local semantic search. A small embedding model runs entirely on-device (WASM, no network call) to index your notes by meaning, not just keywords — nothing about your notes is sent anywhere to power search.
    • Knowledge Graph view. A force-directed, draggable, zoomable graph of your notes.
    • [[Wiki Links]] — type [[Note Title]] in any note to link it to another; it becomes a real edge in the graph and shows up in a backlinks/outgoing-links panel on the note itself.

    Improved

    • Replaced window.confirm / window.prompt with themed in-app dialogs — the native versions were unreliable inside the Tauri webview.
  6. v1.0.0 — First Stable Release

    Released: August 21, 2026

    New

    • Folders. Organize notes into folders and move a note between them from the editor header.

    Improved

    • General stability and UI polish following the 0.1.0 preview build.
  7. v0.1.0 — Initial Preview

    Released: August 20, 2026

    New

    • First build of Nexus: create, edit, and search notes, stored locally in a single SQLite database — nothing leaves your device.
    • Markdown editor with live preview.
    • Local-first desktop app built on Tauri — no account, no server, no telemetry.
