What's new in Nexus

Every release, newest first. Updates install automatically.

  1. Write Richer

    New

    • [[ Note Title ]] note-link autocomplete. Type [[ anywhere in a note and a dropdown of your note titles appears. Keep typing to narrow it (fuzzy matching, so [[rcp finds "Recipe Ideas"), then press Enter or Tab, or click, to insert the link. No more exact-title typing, and no more accidental dashed "missing" links from typos. Want to link to a note you haven't written yet? Choose New link to insert a link for what you typed.
    • Images. Paste a screenshot or copied image straight into a note, use the new image button in the toolbar, or drag image files in from your desktop. PNG, JPEG, GIF, and WebP are supported (up to 8 MB each). Images are stored in your local database, so they're included in database backups and never bloat your note text.
    • Tables. Insert a table from the toolbar. While your cursor is in a table, extra controls appear to add or delete rows and columns, toggle the header row, or delete the table. Press Tab to move between cells, and Tab in the last cell adds a new row. Tables save as standard markdown.
    • Task lists. Turn any lines into clickable checkboxes from the toolbar, including nested tasks. Completed items are greyed and struck through. Tasks save as - [ ] and - [x], so they stay readable in any markdown app.
    • Backups now include your bookmarks and settings. Browser bookmarks, theme, default homepage, and editor and Assistant preferences travel inside the backup file. Restore it on a new machine, restart Nexus, and everything comes back with your notes.
    • Markdown export includes images. Exported zips now contain an _attachments folder, and your notes link to those files with relative paths, so images display in any markdown editor.

    Improved

    • Images show up everywhere. Version History previews, Assistant chat bubbles, and the tutorial preview now display your images instead of broken placeholders.
    • Existing markdown comes alive. Tables and - [ ] checklists already in your notes now load as real tables and checkboxes in the editor instead of plain text.
    • Nested task lists keep their structure when saved.

    Upgrading

    • Your database updates automatically on first launch. No action needed.
    • Backups made before 6.1.0 restore your notes as before, but don't contain bookmarks or settings. Make a fresh backup after updating.
    • Markdown export leaves an image reference as-is if that image is no longer in the database.
  2. Connected & Clear

    New

    • Nexus Cloud. Create an account, sign in, and power the Assistant with your own Nexus Cloud Account, no third-party API key needed. You can view your usage, regenerate a new key, reset a forgotten password by email, or delete your account from within the app.
    • Nexus Cloud AI now searches the live web on its own. Ask about news, current events, prices, scores, or anything that may have changed, and the Assistant searches the web and answers from fresh results instead of saying it has no live access. Timeless questions are still answered directly, so you don't waste usage on unnecessary searches.
    • Chats are tied to your account. Each signed-in account keeps its own Assistant conversation history.
    • Delete chat. The button in the Assistant's top bar now deletes the whole conversation and starts a fresh "New chat", instead of only wiping the messages and leaving an old title behind.
    • Chunked knowledge search. The Assistant searches your notes section by section instead of one summary per note, so long notes are searched in full.
    • Conflict watching. Nexus compares your open browser tabs against your notes and flags possible contradictions.

    Improved

    • Sources only appear when they matter. The Assistant now shows and uses a note only if your question is actually about it. General questions and web browsing no longer show unrelated notes (like a stray "Sources" chip) or send them to the AI.
    • Cleaner answers. Math and chemical formulas now use readable symbols (H₂O, CO₂, →) instead of raw LaTeX like $H_2O$ that showed up garbled.
    • More room for Nexus Cloud AI. The rolling 5-hour usage limit was raised from 100,000 to 250,000 tokens, since a single web-searched answer can use several thousand tokens to get you the best possible answer.
    • A tighter security policy. The app no longer allows connections to Hugging Face domains or in-page WebAssembly code execution, so it permits fewer external connections.

    Fixed

    • Web search returned nothing. Failures in the search backend were being hidden and shown as "no results". The search timeout was raised, page scraping is skipped for faster responses, and errors are now reported so the Assistant retries instead of giving up.
    • Search calls between Nexus's cloud services failed. The AI service now reaches the search service through a direct service binding instead of a public URL.

    Removed

    • Bring-your-own Gemini key support. The Assistant no longer accepts a personal Gemini API key, it uses Nexus Cloud AI instead.
    • The "Clear history" behavior that left an empty chat with its old name.
    • The Hugging Face and wasm-unsafe-eval allowances from the content security policy.
  3. v6.0.0 (Nexus Android)

Nexus is Now in Your Pocket

Your ideas don't stop when you leave your desk.

    Neither should your workspace.

Nexus is now in your pocket.

Today, we're releasing Nexus for Android.

Instead of keeping your notes in one app, your research in another, and your AI conversations somewhere else, Nexus brings them together.

    Your work stays connected.

Whether you're writing at your desk, researching on the train, or capturing an idea before it disappears, Nexus is now with you — wherever you go.

    What's Inside

    📝 Your Notes

Write, organize, and connect your ideas.

    🌐 Your Browser

Research the web without leaving your workspace.

    ✦ Your AI

Ask, explore, write, and think with an assistant connected to your workspace.

    🧠 Semantic Search

Find what you're looking for by meaning, not just keywords.

    🕸️ Knowledge Graph

See the connections between your notes, ideas, and knowledge.

🔒 Local First. Private by Default.

Your workspace is designed to stay on your device.

    Built for Thinking

Nexus isn't just another notes app.

It's a workspace where research, writing, knowledge, and AI come together.

And now, you can take it with you.

    📱 Nexus for Android

Nexus is now available on Android.

Download the latest APK from the Assets section below and install it on your Android device.

Note: Nexus is currently distributed directly as an APK rather than through the Google Play Store. Android's Google Play Protect may display a warning when installing apps downloaded from outside Google Play. This is a common precaution for apps installed outside the Play Store and does not necessarily mean there is anything wrong with the app.

If you downloaded Nexus directly from this official GitHub release, you have the official Nexus APK. You can safely continue with the installation. If you're not comfortable installing an app outside Google Play, you can simply cancel the installation and wait for the Google Play release.

    Install

    1. Download the .apk file from the Assets section below.
    2. Open the downloaded APK on your Android device.
    3. If prompted, allow your browser or file manager to install apps from this source.
    4. Follow the installation instructions.
    5. Open Nexus and start building your workspace.

💬 We'd Love to Hear From You

  4. Branded & Focused

    New

    • Added the Nexus mark and wordmark to the custom title bar, so the app is recognizable at a glance even before any note is open.
    • The window title (and therefore the taskbar label) now updates live as you move around the app — showing "Nexus - Welcome" on the home screen, "Nexus - Untitled" (or your note's actual title) while editing, and "Nexus - Browser" / "Nexus - Assistant" / "Nexus - Graph" / "Nexus - Settings" on their respective tabs.
    • Added a delete/trash icon to every note, which appears when you hover over the note in the sidebar/home view, allowing you to delete a note directly without opening it first.

    Removed

    • Removed the Native Title Bar. Nexus now always uses its own themed title bar, so it matches your color scheme everywhere, on every platform.
    • Removed the now-unused native title bar syncing code — the sync_titlebar_theme Rust command, its Windows-only DWM caption-color logic, and the titlebarSettings frontend module — along with the windows and raw-window-handle crate dependencies they required, keeping the app leaner and cleaner.
  5. v5.3.0 — Streamlined Workspace

    Released: September 10, 2026

    New

    • Added a sidebar toggle to the Notes tab, letting you collapse and re-expand the notes sidebar for a wider, distraction-free editor.

    Improvements

    • Refreshed the icons across the navigation rail for a cleaner, more consistent look.

    Removed

    • Removed the Quick Capture feature, including its rail button, popup modal, and the dedicated one-line-title capture flow.
    • Notes can still be created instantly from the + button in the Notes sidebar or via the Command Palette (Ctrl/Cmd + K) — this change simply removes the extra capture pathway in favor of those existing, more discoverable entry points.
    • Removed the now-unused Quick Capture component, icon, and styling code, keeping the app leaner.
  6. v5.2.0 — Browser Polish & Persistence

    Released: September 7, 2026

    New

    • Desktop Browser experience. The Browser tab has been redesigned for desktop with a cleaner, more spacious interface while keeping the same navigation, bookmarks, tabs, and native browsing functionality.
    • Persistent browser tabs. Each open browser tab keeps its own native page alive in the background, so switching between tabs preserves the page exactly where you left it.
    • Tab overview. A dedicated tab overview makes it easy to see all open pages at once, switch between them, and close individual tabs.
    • Eight-tab limit. The Browser now supports up to 8 simultaneous native tabs, with clear feedback when the limit is reached.
    • Browser bookmarks library. Saved pages now have their own dedicated library, with favicon previews, URLs, and individual delete controls.
  7. UI Upgrade

    Improvements

    • Improved and refined the user interface across the entire app.
    • Enhanced the overall visual design for a cleaner, more modern experience.
    • Updated various UI elements to improve usability, consistency, and navigation.
  8. Rich-Text Editor, Multi-Chat Assistant & Conflict Watching

The biggest release since the Browser/Assistant/Graph launch in 2.0.0. The note editor is now true rich text, the Assistant supports multiple saved conversations and now watches your open tabs for factual conflicts with your notes, and first-time setup got a lot friendlier.

    New

    • Rich-text (WYSIWYG) note editor. Notes are now edited as real formatted text — bold looks bold, headings render at size, lists render as lists, and [[wiki links]] / #tags appear as clickable, colored pills right in the editor — while still saving the exact same plain Markdown underneath. Paste-as-code detection, syntax highlighting, and auto-capitalization all carry over to the new editor.
    • Word-level Undo/Redo. Undo and Redo in the note editor now step one word at a time instead of grouping by typing burst, matching the feel of Google Docs rather than reverting whole sentences at once.
    • Multiple, saved Assistant conversations. The Assistant tab now has a collapsible sidebar of independent chat threads — new chat, rename, delete — each persisted separately and restored after a restart. Existing chat history is migrated in automatically as your first conversation.
    • Contradiction watching. Nexus quietly compares the text of your open Browser tabs against your notes and flags likely factual conflicts. A cheap, on-device similarity pass filters candidates locally before a single narrow Gemini call confirms an actual conflict, so this doesn't burn API calls on every tab.
    • Assistant awareness of every open tab. Previously limited to the current page, the Assistant can now optionally read every tab currently open in the Browser, with a single "Aware of N tabs" toggle controlling whether that text is included in a question.
    • Export a note as PDF. A new "Export PDF" button in the note header renders the current note — headings, bold/italic/underline/strikethrough, lists, blockquotes, code blocks, links, and colored #tags matching their in-app color — to a standalone PDF via a native Save dialog.
    • Word count bubble. An optional floating word/character/character-excluding-spaces counter for the note you're editing, toggled from the editor header.
    • Friendlier first run. A proper Welcome screen (soft animated background, "Write Your First Note" call to action, quick links to the Browser and Assistant tabs) plus a short, skippable Links & Tags tutorial that appears the first time you start writing — teaching [[wiki links]], automatic mentions, and #tags with live-rendered examples pulled from the app's own renderer.
    • In-app Gemini API key guide. A four-step walkthrough (open Google AI Studio, create a key, copy it, paste it) appears automatically in Assistant settings until a key is saved, with a button that opens AI Studio directly inside Nexus's own Browser tab.
    • Friendlier error messages. Failures — a missing or invalid API key, hitting a rate limit, a network problem, a bad restore file, credential-store issues — now surface as a short plain-language explanation with an optional "Show Details" toggle, instead of a raw technical error string.
    • A consistent icon set. Hand-built SVG icons replace emoji throughout the tab rail, Command Palette, and Welcome screen.
    • Time-aware Assistant greeting. The Assistant screen now greets you differently depending on the time of day (including a gentler tone late at night), with a rotating set of taglines.

    Changed

    • Editor mode simplified. The Edit / Split / Preview toggle introduced in 4.1.0 is gone — there's just one live, always-formatted view now, since the new rich-text editor makes a separate preview pane unnecessary.
    • Vault Stats tab removed. The Stats tab added in 4.0.0 (total notes, word counts, most-used tag, etc.) has been removed from the rail.
    • Nexus is now distributed under a formal proprietary license. A dedicated LICENSE.md and End User License Agreement now spell out usage terms, the BYOK (bring-your-own-key) model for AI features, and the app's local-first data handling — Nexus was never open source, but this is now stated explicitly rather than left implicit.

    Improved

    • Chat history is now scoped per conversation rather than one continuous, unscoped log.
    • Assistant settings text more clearly explains exactly what does and doesn't leave your device (note snippets actually matched, your question, and — only if enabled — open tab text; nothing else, ever).
    • An API key saved under a short-lived earlier internal storage format is now picked up automatically the first time Nexus looks for it, rather than appearing unset.

    Fixed

    • Restoring a Gemini key from an old internal credential slot no longer requires re-entering it by hand.
  9. v4.2.0 — Graph Polish, Browser Persistence & Assistant Safety

    Released: August 26, 2026

    New

    • Default homepage. Settings › Browser now lets you set the page new tabs open to, instead of always defaulting to the built-in search engine.
    • "Delete Forever" from Trash. Individual trashed notes can now be permanently deleted one at a time — not just via "Empty Trash" — using the same "click again to confirm" safety pattern.
    • Clear All Data. A new danger-zone action in Settings › Data wipes every note, folder, tag, chat message, embedding, and version in one step, for a genuine fresh start.
    • Open Externally. The Browser tab can now hand off the current page to your system's default browser with one click.
    • Graph View folder legend. A legend in the bottom-left of the Graph now maps each node color back to its folder.
    • Zoom controls in Graph View. Explicit + / − / reset buttons, alongside the existing scroll-to-zoom and drag-to-pan.
    • Search-source labeling in the Assistant. Note sources shown under a reply are now labeled "Sources (semantic)" or "Sources" depending on which search actually found them.
    • Local model download progress. The first time the on-device search model needs to download, the Assistant now shows a live percentage instead of just going quiet.

    Improved

    • Background browser tabs now stay exactly as you left them. Switching away from a tab and back no longer reloads it — scroll position, paused video, and unsaved form input are preserved.
    • Well-linked notes stand out more in the Graph. Node size now scales with how many links a note has, and pinned notes render with a gold ring.
    • Version history is capped at 250 snapshots per note, oldest pruned automatically, so a note edited for years can't grow an unbounded history.
    • Markdown export now includes frontmatter (title, created, updated, pinned) in every exported .md file.
    • The Assistant no longer shows stray citation markers like [1] or [2, 3] that Gemini sometimes adds out of habit — this app has no source list to back them.

    Fixed

    • #tags and [[wiki links]] typed inside a code block or inline code span were being parsed as real tags/links. They're now correctly left alone.
    • The address bar could fall out of sync on sites that change the URL without a full page reload (e.g. clicking a video from YouTube's homepage). It now catches this client-side navigation too, not just full document loads.
    • Zip export paths are now sanitized against unsafe entries that could otherwise write outside the intended export folder.
  10. v4.1.0 — Split View, Related Notes & Message Actions

    Released: August 26, 2026

    New

    • Split view. The editor now has three view modes — Edit, Split, and Preview — toggled from the note header. Split shows raw markdown and its rendered preview side by side instead of switching between them.
    • Related Notes (semantic). Below the editor, notes with similar meaning to the one you're viewing — but with no explicit [[link]] between them — now surface automatically in a dashed "Related (semantic)" panel, powered by the same local embedding index the Assistant already uses. All powered locally.
    • Save an Assistant reply as a note. Every assistant response now has "Copy" and "+ Save As Note" actions, so a useful answer doesn't have to be retyped by hand.

    Improved

    • Deleting a note now gives feedback. Moving a note to Trash surfaces a brief "Moved '<title>' to Trash" toast; if a delete fails, a separate dismissible error toast explains why instead of only logging to the console.
    • Restoring a database backup is safer. Before overwriting your live database, Nexus now verifies the chosen file is actually a valid SQLite database and keeps a copy of what was there before (nexus.db.before-restore) in case the restore turns out to be the wrong file.
